The University Hospital Bonn (UKB) was established on January 1, 2001 as an independent institution under public law. It replaced the previous medical facilities of the university. The UKB takes on tasks in health care, including high-performance medicine and public health. In addition, it ensures the connection of health care with the areas of research and teaching at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bonn. 

With around 32 clinics and 26 institutes as well as 8,000 employees, the UKB is one of the largest employers in Bonn. The UKB treats 350,000 outpatients, 50,000 inpatients and 30,000 emergency patients annually.

Since 2007, the University Hospital Bonn has been a Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) funded by the German Cancer Aid, together with the University Hospital Cologne as a center for integrated oncology (CIO). The CIO is one of the four top oncological centers in Germany that strive for excellence in patient care as well as in clinical, patient-oriented and basic research.
